Are you tired of hearing about people who blame others
for their problems? Do you wish more parents would teach
their children the importance of being responsible, and
understanding there are consequences to their actions?
You can't change a stranger's behavior, but you can make
a huge difference within your own family. As an experienced
public health nurse, I'm very familiar with the misery people
can create for themselves just because no one taught
them how to be responsible and make good choices.

Slogans on shirts and bracelets are so popular that I
decided to use them to help give parents "an excuse"
to teach responsibility and reinforce the message. Imagine
the stress and grief that could be prevented just by calmly
discussing responsibilities on a regular basis, rather than
getting mad or hurt when irresponsible behavior occurs.

Schedule a regular family night where everyone wears their
it'smyresponsibility shirts. Establish a few guidelines like
taking turns and speaking in a calm voice. Have everyone
volunteer a personal responsibility and discuss why this is
their responsibility.

For example, 5 year-old Bobby admits it's his responsibility
to brush his teeth. Usually he has to be nagged and a fight
ensues which makes everyone cranky. Ask the following
questions in a neutral way... why is it important for him to
brush his teeth? What can he do to help himself remember?
If he continues to forget, what should the consequences be?
(Saving his allowance for his future dental bills?) Focus on
being realistic and consistent.

Repeat this discussion of responsibilities weekly and stick
to one responsibility each time. Keep discussions brief and
friendly. Avoid confrontation. Use the shirt and bracelet as
tools to remind you and your kids about what was discussed.
If little Bobby forgets to brush his teeth, just point to his
bracelet!  (My shirt and bracelet remind me to take
responsibility for eating healthy and exercising.)

IT'S MY RESPONSIBILITY to be a good citizen and conserve natural resources.
Here's a tip to conserve your printer ink:
After you click PRINT or PRINT SET-UP, choose B&W, draft or toner-saving
settings. (Your
particular software may include different wording.) Do this anytime
your printed material doesn't have to look perfect or be in color. Pass it on!
